Unpacking Sadness

Sermon Summary:

  • I know I’m not alone when I say that I’m sad because I’ve experienced loss & disappointment during this time
  • To be unaware or under-the-control of our sadness is unhealthy. Instead, we must unpack our sadness to God in prayer
    • Our soul is like a suitcase: you have to unpack the bad to make room for the good
  • The lament psalms can teach us how to unpack sadness (Ps 22)
    • Must consider the Psalm as a whole with all its different parts of prayer

1. Express our tears (Ps 22:1-2, 6-8, 12-18):

      • Pouring out our sadness & hurt to God using powerful and raw language out-loud
      • Starting a grief journaling 2.

2. Plea for deliverance (Ps 22:11, 19-21):

    • Pleading for deliverance should be part of grieving our sadness, but not all of it

3. Reassert our trust (Ps 22:3-5, 9-10)

    • Recalling the past faithfulness of God

 4. Hope & Praise (Ps 22:22-31):

    • trust in him that he will one day set all things right because he is good and righteous
  • Do the “Timeline Test” to identify sadness that is unprocessed
